The Henry Knowles Beecher Papers, 1848-1976, include Beecher's personal and professional correspondence, research files, meeting minutes, professional activities records, writings, and lectures generated during his tenure as Henry Isaiah Dorr Professor of Research in Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School and anaesthetist-in-chief at Massachusetts General Hospital. Beecher's research and writings focused on physiology and control of pain, effects of drugs, medical ethics and human experimentation. The collection also contains correspondence, photographs, reports, notes, maps, and related documents resulting from his military service as chief consultant in resuscitation and anesthesia for U.S. Office of the Surgeon General in the Mediterranean theater during World War II.
